Cooling:
Keep curtains and blinds closed during the day to decrease the amount of solar heat that enters your home.
Replace or clean your air conditioning filter every month or as needed. As debris collects, less cool air enters your home. (Contact R.R. Kling & Sons for all your filter needs at discount prices.)
Try to utilize fans to remain cool instead of lowering the thermostat.
Set thermostats on automatic rather than running it continuously. (If you have an older style thermostat, replace with an updated digital version. They are much more accurate and can help you save on your energy bills! Call R.R. Kling & Sons today for a new Honeywell thermostat today!)
Make sure the weather stripping around your windows/doors is in good condition.
Keep the dampers on your fireplace closed when not in use.
Installing whole house fans help keep your home cooler by pulling cool air through your home and exhausting warm air through the attic.
Heating:
Replace or clean your radiator filters every month or as needed. As debris collects, less of the hot air is entering you home.
Make sure radiators, baseboard heaters, and warm-air registers aren’t blocked.
Open south and west facing curtains during the day to allow solar heat to enter your home and closed at night to keep out the chill.
Keep the dampers on your fireplace closed when not in use.
Appliances:
Turn your water heater down to 120 degrees.
Turn your computer and monitor off when you are not using it. It is a misconception that computers last longer if you leave them on. Turn off monitors, copiers, printer, etc. in your home and office. Screensavers do not save energy. It is better to configure them to go into sleep mode.
Wash only full loads of cloths and dishes. Wash your clothes in cold water whenever possible. Let your dishes air dry.
Don’t use the “rinse hold” option on your dish washer. It uses 3 to 7 gallons of hot water each time you use it.
Don’t set refrigerator and freezer temperatures too low. The recommended temperatures are 37 to 40 degrees for your refrigerator and 5 degrees for your freezer.
Dry towels and other heavy materials in separate loads from lighter clothing. Don’t over dry your clothing. Remember to clean the lint trap in the dryer every time you place a new load in the dryer.
Use the cool-down cycle to allow the clothes to finish drying with the residual heat in the dryer. And consider air-drying your clothing when possible.
Home:
Turn off lights when you exit a room.
Take short showers instead of baths.
Use compact fluorescent light bulbs throughout your home.
Turn off water when brushing your teeth or washing your face.
